Wedding Theming; Yes or No? Our opinions talked through before this evenings #weddinghour
Hello loves, we have made it to Hump Day which of course, only means one thing; #weddinghour. As well as being a little mid-week treat from ourselves to you, #weddinghour is the perfect excuse to talk all things wedding, have a catchup with our wedding industry friends and too, get inspiration and advice for just about any wedding topic. Tonights, is all about wedding themes. Love them or loathe them, this is your chance to share your little pieces of advice, inspiration for couples and well, anything you’d like. You can join me over on Twitter from 9pm to share your pearls of wisdom or gather some more pretty wedding finds.
Of course, to kick-start our topic about themes, we’re sharing some of our reasoning behind why a theme isn’t an essential. In the wedding world, I think it certainly is pushed forward that a theme is a must, almost an instant thing that Brides and Couples alike think ‘Oh, I must have a theme’; which of course, isn’t the case. You should do you, whether you opt for a theme or not, it’s not something that you should get stressed over or have to fake for the sake of it.
We’ve all heard that weddings should have a wedding theme — there’s the beach wedding theme, the rustic wedding theme, the vintage wedding theme, and so on and so forth. But as popular as wedding themes have become in social media, we’ve noticed a lot of the couples are steering clear of wedding themes altogether. In fact, there are plenty of reasons you don’t need a wedding theme at all.

I’m hearing (and seeing!) more and more couples describe their weddings by the feeling and atmosphere they want their wedding to invoke, rather than what they want the wedding decor to look like. What’s said often now is “We want our wedding to be laid back, fun, and a time for all our closest family and friends to get to know one another.” Understandably, a wedding theme isn’t an essential part of that equation. Sure, it’s important to consider wedding stationery and wedding decor, but for the modern-day couples, a theme is something we’re seeing less and less of.
I think it is almost a question that every couple will get asked “So, what theme have you opted for?” when the reality of it is that you should do you, not just what is deemed as the normal or sticking with tradition. So, here’s why forgoing a wedding theme actually opens up the possibilities for your wedding…

1. Open up your options
When you’re not restricted to a single theme, you always have more options when it comes to food, drinks, and decor in the aspect that you don’t have to stick with one idea. This is especially important for those that may be choosing a wedding theme, but stuck in a little bit of a rut. You can choose whatever colors and flavors you want, without worrying whether or not it will take away or distract from your overall theme.

2. Your wedding feels sincere
Wedding themes can sometimes feel like a staged show or a production when everything matches perfectly. Sometimes gimmicky. When things don’t match perfectly, weddings feel organic — just like life and your love. As mentioned above, you should do you, opt for honesty and what you love the most; whether this means having a theme or not.

3. Guests get to know you better as a couple
When weddings don’t have a single theme, guests leave feeling like they got to know more than one side of the couple, and have a deeper understanding of what brought you two together. Opting to showcase a personality or opt for a ‘vibe’ will mean that you own feelings and thought processes behind your wedding day will be shown, rather than a topic or theme.

4. It’s less ‘trickiness’
If your goal is to have everything at your wedding connect back to one theme, it means you often have to spend double the amount of time searching for things that work with that theme and it can be hard work finding vendors that fit in with this specific theme.

5. Your wedding will be one-of-a-kind
Wedding themes have a way of putting couples in a box by what wedding they’re having. How many couples can summarize their love and soon-to-be marriage in just one theme? By incorporating multiple interests into your wedding day, you are guaranteed there will only be one wedding just like it — and that’s yours, of course!
So, next time someone asks about your wedding theme, feel free to let them know you’re forgoing the wedding theme entirely and will be sharing all the things you and your partner love most with guests. Good food, great music, and the best of company — what more could any celebration of love need?
