An Interview with Pete Barnes Photography…
Pete is one of our Approved Wedding Photographers, based in Wakefield. He is attending The Wedding Affair at Sandburn Hall on Sunday 2nd October 2016, 12-4pm. Do come and see him, his work is fabulous. We were lucky to catch up with him recently and this is what he had to say:-
Tell us a little bit about you and what made you start up your company. Are there any highlights in your career that are special to you either professionally or personally?:-
I love taking photos of a variety of subjects. The effect of looking at a great photo for me is just as powerful as any other piece of art, be it a nice painting or listening to a great song. If you have a personal connection to that photo the effect is even stronger. This is why I like to think of folk looking back on their wedding photos many years down the line and remember their wedding day and maybe showing them to grandchildren. Photography is the closest thing we have to a time machine and is a fantastic method of relieving a memorable time, however briefly.
I have many highlights, all the weddings we photograph are a pleasure to attend but it’s always nice to see a couple do something a little different. One that sticks out is the couple who walked across the stepping stones at Bolton Abbey after their wedding. I was so nervous they would fall in but they didn’t and we managed to capture some fantastic memories.
What makes you different and inspires Brides/Grooms to book your services. For example, do you have a particular style or theme?:-
We just like to be relaxed and let people enjoy their wedding day, it’s not a photoshoot! There are traditional elements we capture at 99% of the weddings like formal groups, but I try and concentrate on capturing the tiny moments, smiles and glances. These unposed shots are always the most memorable. I have always believed in complete freedom of choice when the couple receive their photos. This is why we have always given the couple the digital images on disc. If they want to do their own prints and albums, usually at far less cost, they are free to do so. I hate the idea of having them to pay for expensive reprints after they have already paid you for doing a job.
Is there anyone in the industry or in the World for that matter, that inspires you and gives you a sense of direction:-
Friends and family are my most important influencers and inspirations. In terms of photographers I love the black and white work of Ansel Adams. I try and incorporate a lot of black and white images into my wedding photography. I think people just look better in black and white, I love it’s timeless quality. This isn’t to say clients don’t receive the colour images as well though!
What do you love about weddings, what makes you get up in the morning and do you have any stories to tell or embarrassing moments:-
I love the atmosphere at weddings. There is invariably a tangible happiness to the whole event. I always say weddings are great working environments. It’s lovely when everyone is so happy you almost feel like a guest instead of someone at work. Most of my embarrassing stories have to do with near misses and things like falling in rivers or getting run over. My wife who assists me usually keeps an eye on me if I’m planning something a bit risky. Sometimes you need to put yourself in some awkward positions to get the perfect shot. I always like to capture the couples reaction should something like this happen!
If you were to offer three tips to a Bride/Groom, on planning their wedding, what would they be?:-
The day goes so quick, and so it should, enjoy every moment.
Don’t worry about minor details, you have generally planned the day for months and professionals always know what they are doing so don’t worry about something not going as planned.
This is a little self serving but remember to get some great photos!
What type of Venue, Style of Wedding or Theme would suit your service and why?:-
We photograph the whole range of venues and styles from big exclusive use mansions to intimate country pubs. I think the main factor is everyone is relaxed and the couple are in love. These are the only elements we need to get great images.
Where can Brides/Grooms go to find your images?:-
Most of my work is on my website. I do have Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram streams as well if people want to keep up to date with how things are going.
