A Social Savvy Wedding
Good morning! The sun is shining, it’s Wedding Wednesday and we have made it to hump day; there’s a heap of reasons why we have a lot of love for Wednesday’s and of course, not forgetting our beloved wedding chat, #weddinghour.
If you read our pretty pages religiously, you will know that Wednesdays must be up there with our favourite days. First of all, its ‘Wedding Wednesday’ and we love any excuse to talk everything, and anything about weddings (obvs!). Second of all, it’s also when our home-grown, inspirational and totally beautiful wedding chat, #WeddingHour takes place from 9-10pm on Twitter, again yet another excuse to talk none stop about weddings! It’s undeniably, a wonderful day.

Tonight, as you may have gathered by the title, we are talking Social Savvy weddings; how to add social media into your day, utilising modern-day media, VR, streaming and everything in between.

One thing that you may not have thought about yet when it comes to planning your wedding is, to what extent do you allow your guests to use social media? Of course, at The Wedding Affair we’re huge lovers of social media. After all, we’re the hosts and originators of #WeddingHour – the UK’s most popular hashtag hour. We see so many engaged couples and industry professionals sharing ideas, arranging styled shoots, and connecting worldwide; we love how Twitter has become such a powerful tool. Not only that, but with all our social media platforms updated daily, The Wedding Affair is nothing short of social media friendly.
While some couples encourage their friends and family to snap as many photos as possible throughout the day, others are asking their guests to shut off their camera’s and phones for the day. There are understandably strong arguments on both sides. Which is why you will have to keep your eye’s peeled for next weeks blog too, where we will be exploring unplugged weddings.

So, Why Use Social Media at a Wedding?
Using social media is a great way to show people who couldn’t attend what is happening and keep them included in the festivities of the day. Encouraging guests to use social media can also be a pretty neat way to get your guests meeting new people and to keep both the party and conversation flowing, proving great to keep every one entertained, connected and involved during the drinks reception and the hours following after.
Another benefit to encouraging guests to take photos is that they can capture moments which the photographer may have missed out on, or get different angles on a beautiful photographs, giving you more photos to cherish.

An increasingly more popular way of using social media is through the use of hashtags. Why not create a special hashtag for the day, for example engagement party? It can be used across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This way your guests will be able to share and upload images on the day, and look back on them too. Just make sure it’s unique so other’s can’t gate-crash your hashtag!
Use signage to promote your hashtag on your day, include it in your website, and on stationery to make the most out of social media.

Include Your Guests Right From The Very Start…
Keep your guests informed right from the very start if you are planning to have a social media friendly wedding. If you are aiming to be a total tech obsessive, a website or e-invitations may be the best way to do this.
When designing your save the dates, put a web address on which has more information about the day. Include details on the website such as the order of service, information about accommodation, transport and any requirements you expect from your guests. Of course, your hashtag too!

Social savvy brides and guests can turn to media such as Snapchat or Instagram to document their day. By sending photos and videos, brides can create a montage to share with their online friends and family.
Include your guests in the fun by customising your own filter that will temporarily appear on the app within the physical location of your wedding venue. This will be loved by all ages, we guarantee!

You will have friends and family from all over the world, some unfortunately will not be able to attend your wedding. So, why not ask your wedding coordinator to live stream your ceremony or certain parts of the day, this could be done for example, through Facebook Live, or Periscope.
That way everyone can be included and still be able to celebrate your special day with you.

Another form of entertainment which your guests will love is the use of a Photo Booth, or selfie station. This will allow and encourage guests to share photos and their own memories through social media with your special wedding hashtag, whilst adding an element of entertainment.
