Monika & Joe: An Intimate, Stylish & Urban City Centre Wedding in Sheffield
Hello, beauts! We welcome you back to our pretty little space on the internet with the most gorgeous real wedding, courtesy of one of our most talented photographers, Freya Raby Designs. Not only is Freya just so lovely, but her work is beautiful and radiates the emotion captured on the day of any wedding or photo shoot. Of course, you only have to take a glimpse at the images in today’s wedding to realise that!
Lovers, Monika and Joe tied the knot in the picturesque setting of Sheffield Town Hall on the 5th of January 2018. Their intimate and special day was shared with their most loved which even involved a Face-Time call to Monika’s family over in Poland. It’s safe to say, we adored everything about their day that consisted of fine-dining, laughs, and the prettiest of photo-shoots; all of which just prove that your wedding day doesn’t have to cost thousands upon thousands to be special and truly memorable.
Let’s find out more from their dreamy day, shall we?
Freya, their photographer says;
“If I had to pick three words to describe Monika and Joe’s wedding they would be: intimate, urban and effortless.
They tied the knot in Sheffield Town Hall with just their close family – Joe’s half sat in the registry office and Monika’s side watching on face-time all the way from Poland.
Monika is a fellow creative and went from being a client to a friend as we sent ideas back and forth and planned photo opportunities! Her dress was beaded, vintage and beautiful which she paired with her late grandma’s gold earrings and the most gorgeous bouquet of deep and blush pinks, purples and lots of green.”
“After the ceremony we dashed in the rain from the Town Hall to Sheffield Winter Garden, which is a huge glasshouse and filled with more than 2,500 plants from around the world. It was the perfect location for family and individual portraits (you’d never have guessed it was overcast and rainy outside).
On the walk to Silversmiths we snapped some city feel photos, as well as taking full advantage of their rich blue frontage.
I hope you enjoy a peak at Monika and Joe’s city wedding!”
Hi, Monika! Please could you tell us a little more about how you and your now husband (!) Joe met?
“We actually met through an online dating site and hit it off straight away. One of those ‘we felt like we knew each other for ages’ cliche stories but totally fitting here. We’ve been together for nearly 5 years now… I can’t tell you what made us fall in love exactly, it’s not something I ever considered. We just knew we were the right fit from the start and never looked back! :)”
And the proposal?
“It wasn’t very romantic purely because we are not a romantic type. We were just sitting at home eating dinner and watching some sort of cookery show (most likely) and he just asked ‘Wanna get married then?’ haha and that was that! We kept it a secret until we got my ring, which we chose together. ‘Officially’ we got engaged on my birthday ( 10th of July) when he did actually get down on one knee and asked the proper question and i cried and said ‘yes!'”
The couple opted for Sheffield Town Hall as their ceremony venue as both the architecture and character of the space are stunning. It also fitted the bill perfectly, as it is located in the city centre and close by their reception venue. Oh, and not forgetting the many perfectly pretty photograph opportunities along the way!
“The first thing we booked was Sheffield Town Hall, once we had the date we just looked around for nice restaurants to treat our nearest and dearest to a nice meal in. This wasn’t a big affair and we wanted to keep it as stress free as possible for ourselves. The most exciting thing about planning the wedding was probably getting to taste all of the food as we looked for the right place to hold our mini reception in! We’re both big foodies so we wanted a nice treat that wouldn’t blow the budget”
Monika and Joe loved the planning process and thought it was such a breeze, which is lovely to hear. I’m sure you will agree that it’s upsetting when couples get so stressed and caught up in the details? Take advice, bride-to-be’s!
“If I’m being honest I didn’t really have that much to plan. So it was really easy! once we had the date and the venue everything else just kind of fell into place. I decided that if anything was giving me any trouble or felt forced we weren’t going to include it in our day. There was no traditions included apart from the ceremony itself. The most important part to us was that everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did. The photos were very important to me and Freya did such an amazing job with them that I couldn’t ask for more!”
Did you add any styling elements, perhaps a theme?
“I must be the most boring bride ever! There was no theme. Or maybe the theme was comfortable and relaxed? We didn’t fuss over the styling of venue because that wasn’t important to us. We just wanted to get married and enjoy the day. That would be an additional stress we both wanted to avoid. You could say we’re the laziest bride and groom on the planet!”
“Our reception venue was very accommodating and they even printed names and everyone’s menu choices and set table for. They decorated it with flowers, candles and most importantly bottles of prosecco! The events manager – Ruth was absolutely amazing and replied to all my questions and worries about menu straight away. Couldn’t recommend the restaurant and staff enough!”
We adored Monika’s wedding-day look, from the beautifully embellished vintage gown from Ebay (!) to her late Grandma’s gorgeous gold earrings and the delicate headpiece that beautifully entwined in her hair. Not forgetting also, just how dapper the groom, Joe looked. A truly wonderful duo.
“I got my wedding dress on ebay! I originally seen my Asos gem on the Asos website but it was a bit out of my budget and by the time I was ready to buy, they didn’t stock them online anymore. I just browsed until I found one in my size and then pressed ‘buy now’ and hoped it would fit upon arrival! I wanted a vintage inspired dress with lovely beading detail on a budget and that is exactly what I got. We got Joes bits an pieces from different shops. His jacket, shirt and tie was from Next, trousers from Topshop and shoes from Clarks sale! I didn’t have a bridesmaid and Joe didn’t have an usher so can’t share those details sadly.”
“My shoes were a sparkly New Look number, I wore Opium Black on the day and bought a lovely hair pin to fit in with my dress on etsy. I also wore my grandmas gold earrings on the day, she passed away a year before and I really wanted to have a piece of her with me on the day so my mum posted them to me from Poland. They fitted in perfectly with everything else.”
If you had the chance to do it all again is there anything that you would do differently?
“If I could go back and change one thing I’d teleport my family over to be there to witness the wedding. Due to health issues my mum and dad couldn’t be there so we had a Skype date on the day instead. My brother also had to stay behind to orchestrate the connectivity on their side. The only thing that let it down was the signal, the couldn’t see everything properly due to signal dropping in and out so that was a bummer.”
“Apart from that our day was perfect for us.”
As always, we love to share the advice of our couples to you, our fellow readers. Monika’s is advice that we truly believe in, and I think their wedding also, just shows how sticking to what you love and involving the people that you love and care for really is all that matters.
“Do what feels right for you, don’t let anyone tell you what you should and shouldn’t do and who you should and shouldn’t invite, at the end of the day IT’S YOUR DAY
Don’t stress over minor detail, none will notice it apart from you!
Enjoy the day, it really does fly in and is over before you know it and if anything goes wrong on the day don’t let it bring you down. It absolutely chucked it down on our wedding day but we didn’t let the bad weather ruin it.”
As we close-up on this gorgeous intimate and city chic wedding, we would just like to say a huge thank you to the couple, Monika and Joe for letting us share your very, very special day. We’ve honestly loved reading about the pretty goings on and your love story. I’m also sure that many other couples will find your golden words of wisdom very useful.
