Hannah & Jack: A Pop of Pastel for a Comedy Filled Wedding at The Grand, York
Hello, loves! How’s your wedding planning going so far? Are you feeling a little snowed under what with a busy January and planning a wedding at the same time? I know that this month always feels like such a rush and with so many things on your mind, it must be difficult. Well today’s real bride, Hannah has some lovely pearls of wisdom to share with you on how to double-up on little details, potentially saving you both hassle, time and money; making your January just a little more bearable. Perfect!
Avid travel lovers, Hannah and Jack exchanged vows in York at Bedern Hall on Saturday the 5th of August, 2017. A fine medieval hall and what now, makes for a stunning wedding ceremony setting. As newly-weds the couple and their most loved then headed over to The Grand Hotel & Spa, one of our favourite venues and York’s only 5* star venue.
We adore everything about Hannah and Jack’s wedding, from her quite frankly dreamy couture gown to their choice of first dance to Victoria Woods, ‘Barry and Freda’; all of this and plenty of other details combined made sure that their wedding proved a fun-filled, family orientated and fabulous day. What’s more is that their special day was captured by the loveliest Jo from Joanne B Photography who is an absolute joy to work with and well, her images just say it all really.
On with the pretty…
As you know, we love a good love story (who doesn’t?!) and today’s, I think will be hard to beat. Well, both the love story and proposal.
“We were set up on a blind date by our good friends Liz and Damian. Lizzy said if I could last the first five minutes of Jack’s humour then I’d love him! And I did fortunately. We were soon spending all our time together on adventures, nights out with friends and family gatherings.”
“Jack proposed in Hong Kong on our way to Australia. Jack had been carrying the ring around all day and I had kept popping into his pocket to get the sun cream out causing him great panic! We went to Disneyland Hong Kong for the afternoon (I have a sad ambition to visit every Disneyland in the world – only Shanghai left!). I stopped to take a picture of the castle and Jack got down on one knee and proposed!! Best proposal ever if you ask me!”
Please, just how amazing is that? I’m sure that all Disney lovers will agree with me and even be a little envious of Hannah!
Top of the list for the couple was their venue. As mentioned a little earlier, The Grand is one of our favourite venues, ever. We can totally see why both Hannah and Jack fell head-over-heels in love with the opulent architecture, little quirks and originality that the venue boasts so well.
“The first thing we booked was our venue, The Grand. We had both loved the architecture in the hotel for a long time and it is in the city we love (York). We were really excited to make the commitment to each other in front of all our family and friends.”
“The Grand is a hotel in a building that used to be the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway. The rooms are all quirky and have some of the original fittings. We had our reception in the board room with the original parquet floor. The bay windows looked out onto the York walls and York Minster.”
Keeping the day fun and relaxed was a top priority to the couple, which I’ sure you will agree is a huge priority to many couples planning their wedding and what better way to do that than with your favourite band and cocktails?
“It was important to us to get all our loved ones into the same place, make a commitment to each other in front of them then throw the biggest, funnest party ever! We booked a band we had been to see a few times (Frankie Vally tribute act!) and made sure there were fun cocktails on offer.”
Hannah told us that if there one thing she could change about the day, is that she would stop and appreciate every moment more as it all went so quickly, “I would watch Jack again as I walked down the aisle“.
I think this is precious advice for every couple planning their wedding, it can be so easy to get to wrapped up in the planning and materialistic parts and forget the whole reasoning behind it. The ceremony pictures are a really special part and you can just see how joyous they both look. I think this reiterates just how important it is to book a photographer that not only you feel at home with, but can capture those magical moments just as they appear. Thankfully Jo from Joanne B Photography ticked all them boxes for them, as the couple go on to say later.
“There wasn’t a theme as such, we just filled it with our favourite things. My friends did make me an Alan Davies cardboard cut out (guilty crush!) and he made a surprise appearance at the wedding. We also did our first dance to ‘Barry and Freda’ by Victoria Wood. It was a comedy dance and so much fun to choreograph!”
Also, if you’re crushing over their choice of transport you can thank All Luv Dub for their pretty pastel Yellow VW.
Delicious cakes and cupcakes were cooked up and delicately decorated by ‘Crumbs Cupcakery‘ which doubled up as cutesy centre pieces. I have to say, I’ve visited here once before and I absolutely fell in love with their little shop and the cupcakes, even more so! I can totally see why Hannah and Jack opted to source their sweet-treats from this little gem in York.
Continuing the pastel colour scheme, the colours on the cake, cupcakes, chair covers and floral decorations all tied together beautifully at their wedding reception.
Bride, Amanda found her dream dress at ‘Andrea Bambridge’, the daintiest and most delightful boutique based in the heart of York, just a stones throw away from the Minster. It’s easy to say that Hannah made for the most beautiful of brides, I’m sure you will agree? The style of her gown added a touch of tradition and elegance to the day and paired beautifully with their sensational ceremony venue, Bedern Hall and their reception venue, The Grand.
“I got it the year before from Andrea Bambridge in York. Felicity, one of the fitters, designed it herself and it was just stunning. An elegant, timeless cut with a full skirt and boat neck”
Her look was tied together by a lush bouquet with lovely blue and purple flowers, a classic pair of rainbow club shoes and a flowing floor-length veil. Finally, Hannah’s luscious long locks and make up were professionally made up by Blake and Butler, a luxury hair salon in York.
Jack and Hannah opted for stationery from Italian Invitations, another local business that was both close to home and the heart; keeping in with the travel theme, I guess? Italian Invitations created outstanding personalised stationery for the day using photographs of the couple, including their favourite places and things. Something I’m sure the couple will treasure for a very long time.
Little pieces of advice from Hannah & Jack for your own wedding…
“1 – make the day your own and not for the benefit of everyone else. You won’t please everyone and if they love you, they’ll be happy you’ve done it your way.
2 – don’t over complicate the day for yourselves. We doubled up our centrepieces and favours (cupcakes on stands) and everyone loved it. There is no need to go completely overboard.
3 – make sure you get a good photographer who captures all the small moments as well as the big. Jo was amazing – our pictures are such a perfect way to remember our day.”
What an amazing day, this is definitely one of them weddings that you just wish you could be a guest at. A fun family affair with plenty of quirks and little details that made sure that everyone had the loveliest time; cocktails, cake and comedy is not something that you get at every wedding! I also adore how the pair used local York suppliers, a true example of how you can source talented vendors from your very door step.
A huge thank you to Hannah and Jack for letting us share your special wedding day and to give our readers a little insight into your story, I’m sure many will take your advice on board. We hope you have many more happy travels together and visit the last Disney Park on your list, Shanghai. Of course, thank you to the talented Joanne B Photography too for providing us with such beautiful images (as always!) and letting us share your work.
