The Wedding Affair’s Top Tips For Beautiful, Natural Wedding Photographs…
Good morning everyone, doesn’t it feel like Autumn outside this morning? There’s a light fog, sparkling dewy grass and it definitely is getting darker every morning. Making it a little harder to get out of bed too, I must add.
Today, for this week’s ‘Top Tips Tuesday‘ we’re talking all about ‘plandid photos’. A word I like to use for planned candid photography. At The Wedding Affair, we hear it so often when we talk to brides and grooms-to-be and our lovely photographers, one of the biggest pre-wedding jitters is how couples are going to look in their wedding photographs.
Now, I’m camera shy, I hate having my photo taken so I totally understand this. However, opting for a photographer on your wedding day should be one of your top priorities. For a lot of people, their wedding day is the first time they will have worked with a professional photographer, and what with it being a pretty important day, of course you will want to get it right.
So, to make sure you’re making the most of time with your photographer on the day; we have five simple tips which will ensure you get the very best results possible Oh, and beautiful relaxed and natural wedding photographs. AKA, ‘Plandid’, because candid’s are quite often planned, right?
Choose a great photographer
It goes without saying, being confident in your photographer will make you feel SO so so much more at ease! Make sure you do your research when choosing your photographer, look at reviews online, wedding fairs, wedding guides, blogs and social media. And of course, the most important thing… make sure you adore their style and their photos from previous weddings!
The average in the UK for a wedding photographer is somewhere between £1200 – £2500. We say spend as much as you can afford to do. Remember, these photos will stay with you a lifetime! You could regret it if you don’t. The number one thing we read about again and again, what people would do differently if they were to get married now is that they wish they’d prioritised the photography more.

Feel confident in yourself
Also an extremely important point, the more you feel confident, then the more you will enjoy yourself and feel relaxed! I cant think of anything worse than a couple choosing not to book a photographer, or not enjoying them selves on the day due to being camera shy. Remember, this day only happens once! To try over come the dreaded camera shyness, figure out why you are shy? If its your appearance then do try put it to the side. Your fiancee is marrying you because you are beautiful the way you are!
If being in front of the camera is something that you need to work on getting used to, then a Pre Wedding Photo Shoot will work wonders! (I will get to this point after…).
Oh, and one thing i hate about getting my photo taken, and you may have to watch out for… the dreaded double chin! This seems to be something that has a habit of making an appearance into photos. My advice, practice keeping your posture straight, no hunching! And tilt your head upwards slightly, but not to far or that may look silly. The more practice you have at the tiniest of things will make all the difference to your confidence.
Pre wedding photo shoot – Engagement shoot
So, now you have now booked your super talented photographer, you may be thinking is that it? We would always recommend going on a Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot. Most photographers will offer these to you in part of a package along with the wedding day photography. This is a great idea to help build up confidence in front of the camera, and also to be able to build a great relationship with your photographer.
This really will help you to know what to do on your wedding day too, so no guess work! This also may sound cringe, but try find angles, poses and smiles that make you feel confident yet natural in front of the camera, it will pay off for the wedding day.
Book a brilliant make up artist
For the ladies, You may be thinking that you are wanting to do your make-up yourself. Yes, it has many benefits; you know your skin more than anybody, you wont have to splurge out on new make-up when you know what products work for you best and you will be cutting costs on your wedding budget.
However, with that in mind do take into consideration that a make up artist has all the best products, (make up heaven!) they know how to apply make up expertly and precisely, make up artists know how to apply make up and what products work best in flash ans natural lighting. No one wants the terrible ghost face in photos because you have work a foundation with SPF! Take a look at highly talented approved make up artists here.
Leave enough time
Its a natural thing for guests to talk about how much time they spent waiting around at the drinks reception for the bride and groom to finish their photographs. Don’t let this bother you, remember it is your day and you should ideally make enough time for the photographs as you feel right (you are always going to get the grumblers!). You can always give them some fabulous entertainment in the meantime.
Time is of the essence and the more time your photographer has the better. They are the experts so ask them how long they think each element should take, including group shots and photos of just the two of you. Your photographer is not just there to snap away aimlessly. Wedding photographers are super creative, so be open to their ideas and do trust them! For your portraits, listen to their ideas and don’t be afraid to walk off that beaten path a little bit! They will truly make for the most amazing wedding photos.
