Hannah & Richard: A Rustic Celebration of Love at the York Maze
Happy Tuesday, loves! Today’s real wedding is the one of absolute dreams, and with a love story to match. The gorgeous Hannah and Richard exchanged vows on the 2nd of June 2018 at the wonderful York Maze, opting for a pretty rustic celebration surrounded by their nearest and dearest.
The duo entrusted the talented Jo of JoanneB Photography to capture their day and the images certainly haven’t disappointed. Picture twinkling ‘LOVE’ lights, floral and leafy gorgeousness, a stunning dessert table and a true princess dress to top it all off. Hannah and Richard planned the perfect day, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
So, make sure you’re sitting comfy this chilly morn, with a cup of something warm as you read all about the lovely day of Mr and Mrs Scott.
Hannah and Richard met back in 2016 and their relationship grew from strength to strength. Soon after the discussion of marriage, but completely to Hannah’s surprise, Richard popped the question at one of their most beloved seaside locations, Whitby. A soggy Richard later and a delighted Hannah, the two were officially engaged!
“So after being single for a fairly long time, I decided to give online dating a try. I met Richard on match.com and after chatting by text for a while we decided to meet up in April 2016. As soon as we met we seemed to just click, we laughed a lot and arranged a second date only a few days later…. then a third … and a fourth and that was that really.
On our second date we had gone for food , and whilst we were there, were ended up laughing at a couple who were clearly on a first date and things didn’t seem to be going as well as perhaps ours did. It felt like we had known each other ages, just felt right. He has without a doubt the kindest eyes…. and personality to match. I cant imaging being without him.“
“We had talked about getting married, and whether or not it was too soon, as we had only been together about a year but we were both keen on the idea. We love going on days out to the seaside so on one particular sunny day, we went for day out to Whitby. We had just had a walk on the beach and Richard tried to direct me down some stairs to a small beach…. the tide was coming in so there wasn’t actually much beach left.
I had an idea there was something strange happening so after a little protest as to why he was taking me to a small beach where I may actually drown… I followed him down the stairs. When we got to the bottom, he told me what a perfect day he had had and he wanted to make it even more perfect. And with this , he got down on one knee in the sand , pulled a ring from his pocket and ashed me to be his wife. I of course said yes, and with this a wave came and soaked him. I was very impressed by his choice of ring. probably better than I could have picked.“
Please, just what a gorgeous proposal was this? Understated, special and I’m sure a memory that the two will cherish forever.
In the rain, and armed with umbrellas, Hannah arrived in style to York Maze in a chauffeur driven Vintage Rolls Royce Phantom from Cupid Carriages. Her stunning maids’ followed in wonderful VW Campervan from The Yorkshire Wedding Car Company. It’s safe to say that we adore the combination of classic and rustic.
Hannah and Richard chose the talented Shortman Productions Videography to capture their wedding film, which we’re also sure is an absolute dream watch.
Hannah told us that the very first thing to be booked was their venue, the beautiful York Maze. The two knew they didn’t want a long engagement, so got straight to it with the planning…
“We didn’t want a particularly long engagement, were both mid thirties and didn’t see the point in waiting. The previous November we had been to a bonfire at York Maze, and had commented then that there would make a nice ‘different’ wedding venue, so with this in mind we went to visit and booked in straight away. The booking consisted of a three day hire where we had free reign to decorate in any way that we liked so that was perfect. We didn’t need to look anywhere else.”
“I absolutely loved all of the planning of the wedding. Neither Richard or I wanted a church ceremony, and the facility to hold a civil ceremony at the maze was available so it made the day very easy to all be held at the same venue.”
A heartfelt and beautiful ceremony was complete after the duo exchanged rings. Hannah’s glistening ring was sourced from Chapelle, whilst Richard brought his from The Wedding Affair’s very own preferred supplier, Iain Henderson Designs.
“Some parts were difficult, as I lost my dad to cancer in May 2013 and so walking up the aisle without my dad by my side was emotional. I decided that I would like my mum Christine to do the honour, and that she did. She was fabulous, she even did the traditional ‘father of the bride’ speech … which didn’t leave a dry eye in the house…. particularly mine.
Me and my mum chose our dress from Curvy Bridal in Boroughbridge and in true tradition, it was kept a secret until the unveiling on the big day.”
When it came to the dress shopping, Hannah knew she certainly didn’t want a fishtail gown, but a style that would show off her shoulders in perhaps an A-line fit. Hannah entrusted her friend Lisa at Curvy Bridal to find her the dream dress, and she did just that.
“My dress was from Curvy Bridal in Boroughbridge, where my lovely friend Lisa helped me and my mum to find my perfect dress. I went in to the shop with a bit of an idea of what I would and wouldn’t like but can safely say that I wouldn’t have tried mine on if it weren’t for Lisa.
I had almost set my heart on a sparkly princess dress until I tried the one. It was a modern lace in a pale gold colour with a satin belt and it was perfect. I decided that i wanted a short veil by Joyce and a sparkly belt to draw attention to my waist….. which looked tiny in this dress. I had a crystal and gold vine weaved through my hair and my outfit was complete. I felt like a real princess.”
Hannah wore a spritz of a special edition fragrance for her wedding day scent, Mon Paris by Yves St Laurent, which was another gift from her beau.
Hannah’s favourite ladies all don the prettiest grey dresses with embellished necklines from Little Mistress. The gowns married perfectly with the dusty hues in their bouquets created by Chrissie of Horti-Couture and the rustic setting of the Maze.
“When I had asked my girls to be bridesmaids I had bought them a small heart necklace which they all wore, and they also wore an opal style bracelet which matched my grandmas opal that I wore around my neck.”
Richard opted for suits which also were very fitting with the theme, opting for grey with a dusky pink cravat and pocket square. The suits were hired from Suit Direct.
Richard also wore a special edition Royal Air Force watch that Hannah had bought him as a wedding gift, because of his passion for all things Aviation. Another beautiful and special touch.
The tranquil setting of the venue, the original barns and natural features were all perfect for Photographer, JoanneB to capture some truly precious memories from the day. Hannah goes on to say how thrilled she was with everything about the Maze and what they did to help:
“Our venue was truly a ‘maze’ ing…. York Maze is exactly what it says on the tin and during the months of April and July is used as a unique wedding venue. We were able to use the whole place as blank canvas and decorate as extravagantly as we wished. We spent the day before decorating with fairy lights and bunting and filled the place with flowers.
The staff were absolutely incredible, from the moment we booked. Vikki our wedding coordinator was amazing … to the extent that she even said to text any time of the night before if there was anything on my mind or if I had any worries. They went truly above and beyond to may our day the best day of our lives.”
“The food was truly exquisite, the chef Jason went through all our requirements with a tooth-comb and catered for several allergies, vegetarians and vegans, with no problems at all. They had specific waiting staff for the people with allergies, to explain the content of their meal and reassure them that what they had been served was safe for them to eat.
Out of wedding season, we love to go back and do the maze and other attraction that they have open, and to catch up with the truly wonderful staff that made our day, the best wedding by far that I have ever been to.”
Hannah’s dear friend Julie very kindly created the cake of rustic dreams for the wedding, whilst Ford Farm put together a delicious cheese cake which was decorated with fresh fruit and figs. What a treat!
In Hannah’s words, York maze is very simply a barn (a beautiful one), so they didn’t want to detract from its natural beauty. Opting not to have a theme, the couple had the task of decorating the blank-canvas venue with rustic styling and flowers, keeping it elegant, fuss-free and oh-so beautiful.
“I handmade all of the invitations using craft style card, wooden heart buttons and hessian. We used wood to create the save the date fridge magnets. We used dried flower petals as confetti, and used simple fairy lights, rustic bunting and lots of candles as decoration.”
Florist, Horti-Couture truly did an amazing job of decorating the venue top-to-toe with blooms. Hannah and Richard opted for floral displays and centrepieces that mainly consisted of pastel pretty Amnesia roses and leafy goodness. Booth Revolution provided the photo booth fun, whilst guests danced the night away in front of a fairy light backdrop and to music by DJ Jason.
Guests were also treated to delicious Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as favours. Such wonderful idea to keep as a post-dancing snack!
As always, we had to ask the Bride and Groom if they had any top tips, just to help all of you that are planning your weddings too. All of which are pretty important: “I can hand on heart say that I wouldn’t change a thing… I’d do it all again in a heartbeat and even the weather… even though it was a bit damp… it didn’t dampen our day.
1. Do not let anybody influence your choices or decisions, its your day, not theirs.
2. Take the time to enjoy your day. It passes by far too quickly.
3. Try to set a budget and keep to it. It is very easy to get carried away.”
As we draw to a close on this twinkling and truly special wedding, we would just like to say a big thank you to the couple, Hannah and Richard for letting us share their day. We’ve adored reading about the gorgeous goings on! With love from The Wedding Affair, we would like to wish you both a wonderful future and a healthy and happy marriage.
Also, a huge thank you to JoanneB Photography who captured the love, emotions and all of the details perfectly. Please see below for even more images, along with full vendor credits.
